Find the Name Game

‘HA! I found it! I found the name!’

It’s not unusual to be browsing through my booth at a local craft show and suddenly hear someone shout out the above. What started as a tiny SobeSata Co detail has turned into somewhat of a game.

Since the very beginning of 2011, every purse, handbag, clutch, and messenger bag that comes out of my studio has it’s own name to distinguish it from the rest. Claudette, Austen, Marianne, Heidi, Monty, Sabrina, Morticia, Ursula, Persephone, Winston, Minerva, Naomi - the list goes on. Deciding on name for a bag happens in a number of different ways:

Roy Orbison’s ’pretty little pet, Claudette’ was stuck in my head while I was making this bag.

Austen1.jpg

I pictured this with a bibliophile who always carried a book in their bag. Someone like me. Actually, I might keep this one.

Persephone5.jpg

Persephone is known as the queen of the underworld. With this reversible bag featuring traditional blue toile on one side and it’s skeletal counterpart on the other, I thought it was fitting.

Picasso’s line drawing of a dove is what this bag reminded me of while I was making it. ’Paloma’ means ’dove’ in Spanish, and it is also the name of Picasso’s daughter. Coincidentally this bag was sold to someone whose Chilean grandmother’s nickname was Paloma.

Morticia really needs no explanation. One of my favorite creations to date.

It wasn’t until I received my handy-dandy fancy new sewing machine that I was able to add a new unique detail to my bags.

Now each handbag that is made in my studio has their name embroidered in a secret area of each bag! Just another detail to ensure that what you have is a true, one-of-kind, handcrafted original from moi at SobeSata Co.

For craft shows I started to add tags with this information alongside the prices, and suddenly the games began. The names are hidden in different areas - on pockets, in pockets, along the inside gusset, on the handle, anywhere that doesn't distract from first viewing the bag - and people are having a lot of fun trying to find where each bag's name is!

Thankfully there is an endless supply of names for me to choose from so hopefully none will be repeated. Although one time for a few weeks everything that was made in the studio had a 'Mary'-related name - Maria, Marian, Marianne, Mariana. Not sure what influence was in motion during that time.
